STATEMENT OF INTENT.
What is your chosen theme and why have you chosen to study this?
My chosen theme for my A2 Level photography exam is: ‘Flaws, Perfections, Ideals and Compromises’, I will be specifically focusing on ‘Flaws and Perfection’. I have chosen to study this theme as I believe it allows me enormous scope to explore and specialize the skills that I have learnt throughout the photography course.
What research do you intend to carry out based on this theme?
In order to produce a successful, creative and unique final piece I intend to carry out a variety of reserach on my chosen theme of ‘Flaws and Perfection’. I will research and interpret a variety of artists and photographs, such as the work of Irving Penn ‘In Transit’, an editorial piece representing ideals of airport shopping and flawed display. I will also extend my knowledge of this theme by visiting exhbitions and musuems such as the Tate Modern and the National Portrait Gallery, where I will visit displays such as Lord Snowden’s ‘A Life in View’ exhbition, focusing around his photographic journey from capturing the faces of fellow colleagues to photographing the Royal Family, and everyone in between. I hope to explore all options in terms of media and visual exhibitions to build up an intricate understanding of my chosen theme, which will allow me to successfully project my influences and ideas into my work. I will also create a Pinterest account to maintain and gain inspiration from a variety of outlets. Furthermore, I aside from creating an E-magazine and website, I will maintain a sketchbook in which I can jot down ideas.
What photoshoots do you intend to complete during the project to help explore the chosen topic?
I intend to capture a variety of photoshoots to explore my chosen theme of ‘Flaws and Perfections’. I will take envolve myself in a number of photoshoots, both inside and outside of the school environment to progress my ideas, capturing specific photoshoots influenced by certain artists but also take broader photoshoots to indulge in creativity. I hope to include a variety of photographic genres into my work also e.g. photojournalism (ideals), portraits (flaws and perfection/compromises) and still life.
Which artists, photographers, galleries do you intend to research in order to support this project?
I intend to visit galleries such as the Tate Modern and the National Portrait Gallery as mentioned above, which will provide me with world-famous influences such as Lord Snowden. Each of these artists/ photographers will influence my ideas and help to extend and build upon my knowledge of the theme ‘Flaws and Perfection’.
What techniques with the camera, darkroom and photoshop would you like to use to help develop the theme?
Throughout this project, I will use a variety of techniques with the camera, darkroom and photoshop to help develop my chosen theme. I will explore both manual and automatic techniques on the camera - helping me to portray the themes of flaws and perfection through focused and blurred work. I will also use a variety of ISO, aperatures and shutter speeds to emphasise certain features within the photographs. I may also experiament with the darkroom, in order to manually manipulate the photographs to comply with each theme. I will also use digital techniques, such as on Photoshop CC and Bridge to edit photographs I have taken. I am also making an E-magazine, using the programme of InDesign.
What do you hope to learn more about in doing this project?
In doing this project, I hope to learn more about the theme of ‘Flaws, Perfection, Ideals and Compromises’ and carry out an extensive research on a variety of particular artists and photographers. I also hope to specialise and finalise the skills I have learnt throughout the A-level photograph course and successfully implement them into my final piece.
What do you see your final format as being?
I see my final format as being a spread of three to five photographs, taken from my best photoshoot within this project. I will aim to corporate the theme of 'flaws, perfections, ideals and compromises' not only into the context of each photograph portrayed in my final piece but also in the appearance and presentation.
